Change in oral health status as a predictor of change in general health and food consumption in community-dwelling adults aged 75 years or older

Saima Islam David Brennan, Kaye Roberts-Thomson

To study general health, food intake and oral health we sampled people aged 75+ years at general medical practices in South Australia by mailed questionnaires at baseline and after a year. For 75% of people their oral health stayed the same or improved, but 35.9% reported worsened general health. Participants decreased their intake of sweet-snacks, vegetables and meat-fish-eggs over one year but had more fruits and dairy. Worsened oral health was associated with increased intake of sweet-snacks.
